Buy Nothing Day

In honor of Buy Nothing Day, Monkeywrench Books will be closed this Friday, November 23rd.*

Buy Nothing Day is a movement started in response to the orgy of consumerism that the holiday season has become. The Friday after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year in the US. I'm sure we're all too familiar with the stories every year of tramplings at Wal-mart as crazed shoppers fight one another over video game consoles and children's toys.

At Monkeywrench we see ourselves as more of a community space and learning/networking center for activists and progressives than a commercial enterprise. We definitely sell books, but we sell them to pay the rent. No one is making pay, no one is making a profit. So while we respect the needs of business, especially the small business community, we are a little freer to question the deep contradiction of a society that celebrates its most sacred national and religious festivals by promoting crass greed and individualism. In a certain obvious sense, this is absurd and a little sick. So we're taking the freedom to encourage our regulars and friends to celebrate Buy Nothing Day and spend tis Friday with family and friends, not in a Wal-mart shopping line or fighting for a spot in a Target parking lot.
