Report Back From the G8 Protests in Heilingendamm, Germany from June 2007
A Presentation and Slide Show by Lisa Fithian
The recent protests against the G8 in Germany were a huge resurgence of energy for global justice activists and movements--north and south. There were two major German movements that influenced the mobilization--the autonomen, an anti-fascist, autonomist movement that gave rise to the black bloc tactic in the 1980's and the anti-nuclear movement which recently has focused on the struggle to stop nuclear transports.
These combined forces, along with the extensive and stellar organizing by an array of German collectives, networks and groups, used a variety of tactics, including the Five Finger Strategy, culminating in a massive two and half day takeover of all the roads leading into Helingendamm--forcing the G8 to fly and boat delegates in to the city. Despite the overwhelming show of force, pepper spray and water cannons, and internal struggles and divisions around tactics, thousands of mostly young people stepped into their power and shut the roads down!
The excitement, energy and sense of success will reverberate for some time. Come see a slide show, organizing materials and hear stories of what and how things happened!
