U.S. Social Forum May Monday Series: "Crimmigration"
Join Austin organizers and activists for the first event in a series looking at Austin's social movements in preparation for the U.S. Social Forum. Texas Organizers of Grassroots Leadership and Texans United for Families will discuss immigration detention and its intersection with the criminal justice system. The panel will discuss various organizing and advocacy projects aimed at shrinking the immigration detention system and supporting those inside it, from a visitation program at the T. Don Hutto Detention Facility to a campaign to close two detention centers in the Rio Grande Valley. A dialogue of how to best utilize the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit next month to further the fight against immigration detention, the private prison industry, and the United States' "crimmigration" system will follow.
The U.S. Social Forum Series will feature grassroots community groups every Monday in May.
