November 20th is a day to voice support for those struggling to speak under a repressive government. Across the nation artists, musicians, DIY groups, political/student organizations and human rights activists will coalesce to voice against the Israeli apartheid and promote justice for Palestine.

MonkeyWrench Books hosts a night of music with Devil Bats Daughter, Angel Reyezzz and Non-Con.

To many Americans, the concept of a wall separating two populations seems an antiquated symbol tied to communist repression. Yet for millions of Palestinians all over the world a concrete barrier 20 feet high represents the tears and blood shed after 60 years under Israeli subjugation. This wall, to extend 486 miles when the project completes at the end of the year, effectively seals off the West Bank from Israel so as to provide a confined population easier to maintain. Building began in 2003, arbitrarily cutting communities in half and leaving families on the Israeli side expected to forfeit any land taken by Israeli settlers. The wall is one example of “inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them,” Apartheid as defined by the International Criminal Court.

This situation has been veiled by half-truths and downright lies in the western media. The average paper-reading, news-watching American citizen has only been exposed to but a piece of the overall puzzle. Our government gives billions of dollars in aid money drawn from federal taxes, and it is understandable that we should see our tax dollars going to fight religious fundamentalists in the Middle East. But the fact is that there are far more ordinary, human lives living under apartheid than fighting to end it.
