We will be screening this two-part documentary on two consecutive Wednesdays this month. During the Cold War, as African nations struggled for independence from European colonialism, revolutionary Cuba came to the aid of three countries: the Congo, Guinea-Bissau, and Angola. First Che Guevara came to the Congo with a small number of Cuban troops, and later in Angola thousands of Cubans came to fight against South African forces. Filled with first-hand accounts and period footage, this documentary is an excellent examination of South-South efforts to liberate themselves from First World imperialism.

Jesse James will be presenting “Sustainability Now”, a presentation he made at the Canyon de Guadelupe Convention in Mexico which focused on gardening, alternative energy, healing arts and local economy.

We will next read selected chapters from 1000 Plateaus by Deleuze and Guattari:

Afghanistan war resister Victor Agosto will be speaking at Monkey Wrench with Cindy Thomas, manager of Under the Hood, an anti-war coffee house outside Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas. Victor has publicly refused to deploy to Afghanistan on the grounds that the war is unjust. He has also refused conscientious objector status stating that he supports wars of resistance--just not wars of imperialism. Victor still resides in the barracks at Fort Hood in hopes that his regular refusal to obey orders will inspire other troops to resist.

"The only way to make politicians responsive to the needs of the people is if soldiers won't fight their wars, and if soldiers won't fight their wars, the wars won't happen. I hope I'm setting an example for other soldiers," says Victor.
