This will be the inaugural presentation for a new monthly series at Monkeywrench, Community and Labor Organizing. We will feature local leaders and organizations involved in community and workplace organizing in the Austin area.

David Kobierowski recently spearheaded an effort to save his apartment complex, Northcastle Apartment Homes, from being bulldozed by developers and replaced with luxury condos. They were successful; the development company withdrew its rezoning application. The complex remains, with affordable rents. David will tell us the story of their fight and hopefully inspire us to launch more fights against developers and for city-wide affordable housing.

You can learn more about the Northcastle campaign at Austin Housing Pinch.

Natalie Marquis will be speaking about her inspiring work on Monday. Natalie is the general manager for Habitat Suites, a famous permaculture-based hotel in north central Austin. They've developed a normal hotel into a prominent green hotel, through an array of basic changes. Natalie is also the Executive Director of the Texas Solar Energy Society.

This is the first installation of a new monthly feature at Monkeywrench Books, a presentation from a local environmental leader or entrepreneur.
