In honor of Buy Nothing Day, Monkeywrench Books will be closed this Friday, November 23rd.* Buy Nothing Day is a movement started in response to the orgy of consumerism that the holiday season has become. The Friday after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year in the US. I'm sure we're all too familiar with the stories every year of tramplings at Wal-mart as crazed shoppers fight one another over video game consoles and children's toys.

This will be the inaugural presentation for a new monthly series at Monkeywrench, Community and Labor Organizing. We will feature local leaders and organizations involved in community and workplace organizing in the Austin area. David Kobierowski recently spearheaded an effort to save his apartment complex, Northcastle Apartment Homes, from being bulldozed by developers and replaced with luxury condos. They were successful; the development company withdrew its rezoning application. The complex remains, with affordable rents. David will tell us the story of their fight and hopefully inspire us to launch more fights against developers and for city-wide affordable housing. You can learn more about the Northcastle campaign at Austin Housing Pinch.
