Standing with the Students film screening and discussion with film-maker

Start: Sep 29 2007 - 7:00pm

End: Sep 29 2007 - 7:00pm

Standing with the Students tells the story of the struggle of students in
the University of Buea in the Ambazonia region of Cameroon. In response to
a proposed 100% hike in tuition the students went on strike, with the
demands to stop the tuition raise; the construction of toilets and water
fountains, and new books for the library. The government responded with
repression, and to date six students have been killed by government forces
during peaceful protests.

The documentary uses the student movement as a jumping off point to
examine the legacies of colonialism and neocolonialism in Africa, the
impact of economic globalization and the subjugation of the English
speaking Ambazonia region by the French neocolonial Cameroon Regime.

This documentary is the first film of director Valentine Eben, a member of
the Ambazonia Independent Media Center, who will be joining us to present
his film and facilitate a discussion afterwards.

disturbances.”

Battling the Plantation Mentality: Memphis and the Black Freedom Struggle

Start: Oct 11 2007 - 7:30pm

End: Oct 11 2007 - 10:00pm

Battling the Plantation Mentality: Memphis and the Black Freedom Struggle

A Reading and signing by Laurie B. Green

Laurie Green explores the notion of African American 'freedom' in postwar Memphis. She demonstrates that the civil rights movement was battling an ongoing 'plantation mentality' based on race, gender, and power that permeated southern culture long before--and even after--the groundbreaking legislation of the mid-1960s. She points to the Memphis sanitation workers strike, with its slogan "I AM a Man!," as a clarion example of how the movement fought for a black freedom that consisted of not only constitutional rights but also social and human rights.

Laurie B. Green is assistant professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin.

Film screening of Battleship Potemkin

Start: Oct 17 2007 - 7:00pm

End: Oct 17 2007 - 10:00pm

The cinematic masterpiece, by director Sergei M. Eisenstein's, fictionally
recounts events that ultimately led to the Bolshevik Revolution. Fed up with
the ship's officers' brutalities and with maggot-infested rations, the crew
of the battleship Prince Potemkin revolts. The rebellion ignites an uprising
by the citizens of Odessa, resulting in czarist troops' infamous, systematic
slaughter of insurgents and bystanders.

Start: Oct 25 2007 - 8:00pm

End: Oct 25 2007 - 11:00pm

Quien Mato la Llamita Blanca? (Bolivia, 2006 112 min, Spanish with English subtitles)

This film is a brilliant examination of race and identity in Bolivia viewed through a hysterical lens of an indigenous superhero criminal road trip film.

Fantastic!
