In this simple family drama from Iran, two children invent an intricate
plan to conceal the loss of a pair of shoes. Ali (Amir Farrokh Hashemian)
and his sister Zhara (Bahare Seddiqi) are living in a poor neighborhood.
Their mother is suffering from illness and their father is overworked and
underpaid. When Ali is sent out to pick up his sister's shoes, a blind
street peddler accidentally swipes them. Afraid that he will get a beating
if his parents find out, he and Zhara concoct a plan by which she will
wear Ali's sneakers to school in the morning and he will wear them to
school in the afternoon. But the plan has its flaws because Ali is late to
school everyday and his principal threatens to expel him. In a final act
of determination, Ali enters a race to win the third place prize, a new
pair of sneakers. Majidi's acclaimed film is an example of a current trend
in Iranian cinema where children are used as central characters in order
to circumvent censorship issues. CHILDREN OF HEAVEN received an Academy Award Nomination in 1998 for Best Foreign Film

It's Coming! The Dissent! G8 Infotour

The Dissent! G8 Infotour is coming to Austin on April 16th. People are
preparing in Germany for large scale protests against the G8 meeting this
June 6-8, 2007, and are coming to Austin to tell us about what is going on
there.

After the presentation, there will be an open discussion on any number of
topics: Why protest the G8? Would the resources for such a big
mobilization not be better used for local projects? Coalitions? Concrete
action plans and ideas? Possibilities to work together from across the
pond? How to build/support Austin's anti capitalist structures.

Bring some money to help the Dissent folks make it to their next stop!

In the two days leading up to Christmas, a thirteen year-old Monica, a
Colombian street kid, tries to sell roses for money. Surrounded by a group
of fellow runaways and orphan who all get by through robbery,
prostitution, and drugs--mainly sniffing glue, Monica anticipates the
holiday, hoping that there will at least be some sort of party to attend.
Victor Gaviria's look at life on the streets of Latin America is
fascinating, bleak, and uncompromising look at an often forgotten
population.

Zines, Films and Websites
a critical discussion of the rise of girls' media production in contemporary U.S. society.

Girls Make Media analyses girls' films, zines, and websites, as well as girl media-makers and the various social sites where their work is supported. This book explores how media production enables girls' creative expression while also facilitating experimentation with their identities and access to the public sphere.

Girls Make Media reclaims the marginalized history of girls' cultural practices by concentrating on the connections between various forms of media produced by female youth today and girls' historical involvement in domestic arts and written culture.

Mary Celeste Kearney is Ass’t Professor of Radio-Television-Film at UT- Austin. She specializes in girls' media culture. She is author of Girls Make Media (Routledge, 2006), and her essays have appeared in Cultural Studies and Feminist Media Studies. She is also director of Cinemakids, a program for inspiring young filmmakers.
