Herod's Law (La Ley de Herodes) (1999, 120 min)
Directed by: Luis Estrada

Starring: Damian Alcazar, Pedro Armendaris Jr., Delia Casanova, Jesus Ochoa,
Juan Carlos Colombo

Synopsis:
A political satire set in 1949. After the corrupt former Mayor is killed by
the peasants, poor janitor Juan Vargas is appointed new Mayor of a desert
town in central Mexico. Although he tries to bring the motto of the ruling
party to town (modernity, peace and progress) he realizes soon that there's
nothing to do against corruption... except to become corrupt. Systematically,
helped by his pistol, Juan Vargas becomes the law and the worst Major in the
town's history.

This film was banned in parts of Mexico when it came out in 1999 for being
too critical of the ruling PRI party.

The Austin Time Exchange Network is a local program that enables individuals to provide and receive skills and services within a network of people and organizations in Greater Austin. Similar to concepts expressed in bartering and other alternative currency systems this grassroots initiative lets members exchange labor and assistance without using the US Dollar. The program values equality and rewards the service of each person equally in that every member's hour is weighed the same: One hour of service equals one "Exchange Share." regardless of the type of skill offered. The Exchange Share can be spent on receiving n hour of service from another member. The Austin Time Exchange was created to provide individuals with the means to reintroduce a reliance upon the resources from neighbors, acquaintances and community members. We aim to provide an alternative approach to community development and economic opportunity.
